This collection contains Sessions' addresses, essays, sermons, and church committee reports, for the period 1822 to 1867, and amounting to sixty-four documents. Many of the addresses and sermons were delivered several times in Adams and Norwich, N.Y., and surrounding towns, and in Oakland, Calif. The addresses include "Oration and Music," "On the State of the Presbyterian Church," a series of Addresses to Young People, (e.g., "Friendship," "Popularity") and several temperance lectures delivered before a number of temperance societies. The sermons discuss "Time and Eternity," "Fasting," and "Church Government," while the church committee reports include one on "Church History" for the Presbytery of St. Lawrence. The collection also contains religious exercises for Bible class and material on an examination taken for ordination, as well as miscellaneous seminary notes, for the period 1822 to 1823.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River. John Sessions (1795-1884) of Westminster, Vt., graduated from Dartmouth College in 1822 and Princeton Theological Seminary in 1823. He served as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Adams, N.Y., 1825-1830, and Norwich, N.Y., 1835-1843. Sessions became professor of English at Albany Academy, New York, 1848-1855, and principal of Jefferson County Institute at Watertown, N.Y., 1856-1859.
